SMC

Oilgear has always been a leading supplier of systems, components and services to the SMC industry. Our long-term commitment to this industry allows us to offer the best-engineered solutions to meet your hydraulic and electronic control requirements. All of this is backed up by a highly trained technical support staff.

Oilgear SMC systems are used to produce everything from door skins and shower enclosures to body panels for jet skis, automobiles and semi truck cabs. We work closely with press builders, molders and end users at assembly plants to insure that the systems we produce keep pace with material and process developments.

A wide variety of products are available from Oilgear. Hydraulic equipment includes pumps, valves, manifolds and complete systems. Electronic controls can be supplied as retrofit components or completely assembled to include the main control enclosure, motor control center, pushbutton stations and an operator station. Our complete system approach means that the control and hydraulics are perfectly matched.

Auxiliary equipment such as Cams, Cores, Ejectors, Part handling equipment, Die shuttle tables, or other secondary operations can be incorporated into the press system. Multi-zone die temperature monitoring and control can also be included.

Some of the processes and materials that Oilgear is familiar with include: Sheet Molding Compound (SMC), Transfer Injection Molding (TIM), Reaction Injection Molding (RIM), Bulk Molding Compound (BMC), Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), Injection molding, Mixing/Metering/Batching systems.

Control systems are designed to suit the specific needs of the end user. Select the links below for more information on the four most popular control configurations. Any of these systems can be modified to fit your specific requirements.

  • Basic – Low-cost Upgrade for obsolete equipment or relay logic
  • Standard – Multiple Part programs with profiling, auxiliary equipment control
  • Enhanced – Closed loop control, expanded diagnostics and graphics, reporting
  • Advanced Intelligent Leveling – The Ultimate in SMC press control

Basic
The basic Oilgear SMC control is designed as low-cost replacement or enhancement to older AC electronic systems and relay logic controls. The main component in this configuration is the Oilgear EPC programmable amplifier. The din-rail-mounted amplifier provides extended capabilities such as command ramping, programmable calibration, and built-in diagnostics. Optional pressure limiting reduces pump stroke as the command setpoint is reached. This can reduce hydraulic system heat generation and wasted horsepower.

The addition of a micro PLC provides the ability to interface with a position transducer and existing logic for programmable limit switching. A simple operator interface is used to program the pump commands for various parts of the cycle. The micro PLC can completely replace relay logic that is unreliable and difficult to trouble shoot. The basic system can be supplied pre-wired in an enclosure or as loose components to be installed in an existing box. If the upgrade is replacing an obsolete Oilgear AC system, the required pump conversion parts will be supplied.

Standard
The standard SMC press control is a PLC based system with an integral operator interface supplied in a NEMA 12 enclosure. The operator interface provides screen editable setup parameters, part program storage, and enhanced diagnostic tools. The PLC extends the capability of the control system to provide profiling, vacuum molding, IMC cycles, and auxiliary equipment control. Some of the system features are:

  • Store and recall multiple part programs
    - Velocity, pressure dwell, and strip profiles
    - Programmable advance/retract speeds
  • Comprehensive diagnostics
    - Fault Messaging
    - Fault Logging
    - I/O status monitoring screens
  • A Mold Reference cycle allows position switch points to be entered with respect to part thickness.
  • Closed loop pressure control (hydraulic modifications may be required)
  • Option to replace gray scale monitor with color monitor
  • Closed loop speed control can be added as an option

Enhanced
The enhanced SMC system adds a powerful PC based information system to the Standard press control. Features of this system include networking, graphics capabilities, production and shift reports, remote off-site press monitoring and on-line drawing viewer. Additional details and several screen shots can be viewed at Windows HMI .

The enhancements also include closed loop velocity profiling for accurate control of the pressing cycle.

Advanced Intelligent Leveling
The Oilgear Advanced Leveling System provides the best performance available in SMC press control. Four corner leveling offers advantages that are not available on a non-leveling press.
  • Parallel mold closing with off-center loads
  • Better control for large parts and multiple mold configurations
  • More precise velocity control resulting in better part surface quality
  • Ability to apply surface coatings such as IMC evenly across the part
The leveling system electronics are supplied in a painted, air conditioned NEMA 12 enclosure with power disconnect. The standard configuration includes an Allen-Bradley or Modicon PLC. Other PLC manufacturers can be used when needed.

The Windows HMI is included with the Advanced Leveling Control to provide performance monitoring and part tracking.

Custom remote operator stations, networking, and remote I/O boxes can be supplied.
